Dhulikhel: The National Reconstruction Authority, in association with Society of Economic Journalists, Nepal (SEJON), organized a two-day orientation program here on October 12 and 13.
About three dozen journalists who have been covering various aspects of the post-earthquake reconstruction works participated in the orientation.
At the inaugural session of the program, Chief Executive Officer of the NRA Sushil Gyewali shed light on the overall reconstruction activities, achievements made since the establishment of the NRA, plans for the coming days and challenges to fulfil the given mandate.
Executive Member of the NRA Dr. Chandra Bahadur Shrestha highlighted the developments made in the reconstruction of private housing, as it had been the utmost priority of the NRA.
Another Executive Member of the NRA Dhruba Prasad Sharma presented the NRA’s initiatives to resettle the people living in vulnerable areas and informed the gathering about the government’s plan of developing integrated settlements.
Im Narayan Shrestha, Project Director of the Central Level Project Implementation Unit (Education), said the reconstruction of hundreds of schools damaged in the earthquake have been very satisfactory and vowed that the rebuilding of remaining schools will also be completed in time.
During the two-day program, Dr. Taranidhi Bhattarai, Geologist and Steering Committee Member of the NRA, shed light on seismic hazards in Nepal and possibilities of future hazards as Nepal lies in a seismic zone. He also shared his views on the lessons learnt from the April 2015 earthquake and the on-going rebuilding process.
Another geologist Dr. Amod Mani Dixit of NSET presented the latest update on the on-going reconstruction works and highlighted the post-earthquake rebuilding practices in other parts of the world.
Joint Secretary and Spokesperson of the NRA Pitambar Ghimire informed the economic journalists about the NRA’s overall communication activities while NRA Under Secretary Dibya Raj Pokharel highlighted the current spending in the reconstruction, the foreign assistance till date and future need of finances to complete the reconstruction in the given time period.
Statistics Officer of the NRA Kul Prakash Neupane delved on the issues related to the grievances and how the NRA has been handling them. He also shed light on the MIS system of the NRA and informed the journalists about the content of the NRA’s website – www.nra.gov.np.
The program concluded with the presentation by Ujjwal Prajapati, journalist and researcher, in which he explained the overall media coverage on the reconstruction works and shared his findings.
The two-day program was conducted by Pushpa Raj Acharya, the chairperson of SEJON.
