Kathmandu, January 10: The Earthquake Housing Reconstruction Project (EHRP) of the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) has started orientation program for local governments on resilient reconstruction and development and disaster risk reduction and management.
The inaugural program was attended by Chiefs, Deputy Chiefs, Chief Administration Officer, Coordinator of District Disaster Management Committee and government officials of Kavrepalanchowk district which started here today.
The Project aims to provide this orientation to all the people’s representatives and government officials of the all the 32 districts affected by the April 2015 earthquake.
Inaugurating the orientation program, Chief Executive Officer of the NRA Sushil Gyewali said that this orientation was held for local governments as they will have important role in building and development of resilient structures and society.
He said that the government has made enough efforts to encourage participation of local governments, handover responsibilities to them and enhance their capacity while undertaking reconstruction works.
Chief Executive of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) Anil Pokharel said that the orientation would be useful to lead local governments towards disaster risk reduction under the ‘Sendai Framework’ agreed by Nepal.
Chairperson of Municipal Association of Nepal (MuAN) and Mayor of Dhulikhel Municipality Ashok Kumar Byanju said that this program has special significance as it focuses on the capacity building of local governments in resilient reconstruction and development.
NRA Executive Committee members Dr. Bishnu Bahadur Bhandari and Dr. Hariram Parajuli were present at the inaugural ceremony chaired by Bharat Prasad Aryal, Project Director of the EHRP and moderated by Manohar Ghimire, Deputy Spokesperson of the NRA.
